Ashwin Calls for Mohammed Siraj to Be Recognized as a Match-Winner as he was India’s Lead Bowler in Test Series

In the recently concluded Test series, Mohammed Siraj emerged as the standout performer for Team India’s bowling attack, especially in the absence of Jasprit Bumrah, whose participation was limited due to workload management. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and Bumrah himself had made it clear prior to the series that he would feature in only three of the five Test matches – a strategy aimed at preserving his fitness. As expected, Bumrah played only three Tests, sparking concerns among fans about the Indian bowling attack’s strength without him.

However, contrary to expectations, Siraj stepped up decisively, leading the pace attack and delivering match-winning performances. His contributions were instrumental in India leveling the series 2-2, and his efforts drew widespread praise from fans, former cricketers, and analysts alike.

Ashwin Calls for Siraj to Be Recognized as a Match-Winner

Veteran spinner Ravichandran Ashwin lauded Siraj’s consistency and impact, urging the Indian team management to treat him as a genuine match-winner. Speaking on his YouTube channel, Ashwin stated:

“We failed to truly recognize Mohammed Siraj’s potential. The time has come to see him for what he is — a match-winner. His celebrations and energy on the field reflected that sentiment.”

Ashwin highlighted Siraj’s superior work ethic, clean bowling action, and technical precision as key reasons behind his ability to play all five Tests in the series. The off-spinner emphasized the need for workload management for Siraj, much like what is being done for Bumrah.

“He deserves the same level of care and recognition,” Ashwin added. “His age is advancing, and the management must ensure he is rested during non-essential matches.”

Series Performance: Siraj by the Numbers

  • Matches Played: 5 (Only Indian pacer to feature in all five Tests)
  • Overs Bowled: 185.3
  • Wickets Taken: 23
  • Bowling Average: 32.43
  • Best Performance: 9 wickets in the decisive fifth Test

Siraj’s performance in the final Test match, where he claimed nine wickets – was pivotal in India’s efforts to avoid a series defeat. While the Player of the Series award went to another individual, England coach Brendon McCullum remarked that Siraj was a strong contender for the honor.

Building India’s Future Bowling Attack Around Siraj

With India’s fast-bowling lineup in a transitional phase, Ashwin suggested that the team’s pace attack be rebuilt around Mohammed Siraj’s experience and leadership. He named promising bowlers like Avesh Khan, Prasidh Krishna, and Arshdeep Singh as part of the next generation, but emphasized that Siraj should be at the center of this strategy.

“He can be your No.1 Test bowler, your go-to player in crunch moments,” Ashwin remarked.

A Call for Strategic Management and Recognition

Siraj’s performance in the series has reaffirmed his value as a mainstay in India’s red-ball setup. With calls from veterans like Ashwin and support from the cricketing fraternity, it is now up to the selectors and management to ensure that Siraj receives both the recognition and protection that top-tier fast bowlers require.

As Team India prepares for future Test assignments, managing Siraj’s workload while leveraging his skills could be key to long-term success.
